Why Moisture Matters: Easy Ways to Increase Your Pet’s Hydration

Living in Florida, we know a thing or two about heat and humidity. There are days when walking from the house to the mailbox feels like a workout, and we instinctively reach for a cold drink of water.

Our pets are no different.

Proper hydration is essential for every cell, tissue, and organ in the body. It supports healthy kidney function, urinary health, digestion, circulation, temperature regulation, and overall wellness. The problem? Our pets cannot tell us, “Hey Mom, I’m a little thirsty today.”

So, it’s up to us to think beyond the water bowl.

Why Hydration Is Especially Important for Cats

If I had a dollar for every cat owner who told me, “My cat never drinks water,” I might be able to retire and spend my days spoiling my own pets (oh wait, I do that already).

The truth is, cats are naturally low-thirst animals. In the wild, their prey would provide a large portion of the moisture they needed, often containing around 70% water. Many indoor cats still carry those same instincts today, which is one reason urinary concerns can be so common in our feline friends.

This is why I am such a big believer in adding moisture to a cat’s diet whenever possible.

What About Dogs?

Dogs generally have a stronger thirst drive than cats, but they are not immune to dehydration especially here in our Florida climate, during periods of exercise, or as they age.

Many pets today eat a primarily dry diet. Dry kibble typically contains around 10% moisture, compared to fresh foods, canned diets, or appropriately prepared raw diets, which contain significantly more. Adding moisture back into the bowl can be a simple way to help increase overall water intake.

(And no, this does not mean you have to throw your bag of kibble away tomorrow. Remember my favorite phrase: progress over perfection.)

The Bonus Benefits of a Moisture-Rich Bowl

Adding moisture can have benefits beyond hydration.

For the dogs that inhale their meals like they are competing in an Olympic eating event (you know who you are), adding water, goat milk, or pet-safe bone broth can slow things down and create a more satisfying meal experience.

For picky eaters, senior pets, or pets with dental challenges, a little warm broth can turn a boring bowl into a gourmet dinner.

Easy Ways to Add Moisture

Try adding:

  • Fresh water directly to your pet’s food
  • Raw goat milk
  • Pet-safe bone broth (always free of ingredients like onion and garlic—don't get me wrong, I like garlic, but that's a different conversation for a different time)
  • Rehydrated freeze-dried food
  • Canned or fresh food toppers
  • Balanced fresh, gently cooked, or raw meals

Even a few extra ounces of moisture each day can make a difference.

A Few Safety Tips

Any food with added moisture should not be left sitting out all day. Moist foods spoil more quickly, especially in our Florida heat. As a general rule, remove uneaten food after a couple of hours.

The Bottom Line

I always tell my clients that one of the easiest upgrades you can make to your pet’s bowl is simply adding moisture.

You do not have to completely change your pet’s diet overnight. Start with a splash of water. Try a little bone broth. Add a spoonful of fresh food.

Small changes add up. Your pet’s body will thank you for every extra sip.
